BASTION BOLT-ACTION BALLPOINT PENSUpdated 6 days ago

BOLT-ACTION STYLE:

All of our ballpoint pens are bolt-action style.

We do not offer click or twist type pens at this time.

Pens can be used in both the right and left hand. The thumb moves the bolt down along the bolt track and shifts the bolt either forward or back into deployed position.

Pens come installed with standard (oil) black ink only.  We do not substitute other colors or ink types into new pens prior to shipment. If you prefer a different ink, please browse our selection of inks to include with your pen order.

MATERIAL TYPES

  • Aluminum: 100% 6061-T6 Grade Aluminum
  • Stainless Steel: Grade 304 (austenitic): alloy containing approximately 8% nickel.
  • Titanium: Type Ti-6Al-4V (Grade 5) with TC4 Hardness HRC 36.
  • Carbon Fiber: Organic polymer sometimes referred to as graphite fiber.
  • Zirconium: Hardness 702.

ANATOMY OF OUR BOLT-ACTION PEN

ORIGIN

We source materials from multiple countries including the USA to ensure the highest quality at the best price. We cannot specify location by part type or lot with regard to each unit produced.

SLEAMLESS APPEARANCE:

Our natural, uncoated metal pens have a seamless appearance where the pen cone (tip) attaches to the barrel.  Our colored aluminum, stainless, titanium, and zirconium pens are coated creating a slight build on top of the natural metal that does not allow for a totally seamless appearance.  Anodized aluminum has a higher build than polymer coated styles, so the seam is often more noticeable.  With our copper patina pen, you will see the line or break between the pen cone and pen barrel. To access the ink cartridge for replacement, see our installation instruction.

PEN GRIP COMPARISON:

Our poly-coat (stainless steel black, titanium black/grey, and zirconium) and anodized (aluminum) pens are designed to offer increased grip compared to our natural, uncoated metal pens. Coated and anodized pens are not finished with a lacquer top coat for protection or an aesthetic shine. Such a top coat provides a slick surface rather than grip. Our carbon fiber pens have a matte finish that lends to a non-slick feel that also aids in grip compared to the smooth surface of natural metal pens.

SURFACE DAMAGE/WEAR:

All pen surfaces, but most notably coated and anodized surfaces, will show wear if stored with other objects in pockets, backpacks, briefcases, hooked to metal spiral notebooks, etc. Longevity and severity of wear depends on type of use and storage by individual owner.

Surface damage at time of delivery of a new pen is under warranty. Contact customer service with clear pictures of damage immediately at [email protected]

Surface wear is not under warranty for any product we offer.

Anodized and poly coated finishes are susceptible to faster surface wear depending on how the pen/pencil is stored: in pockets with other items, rubbing against course materials like denim/khaki/wool, or in backpacks with other pens, in glove boxes, etc.

Aluminum undergoes anodizing, while stainless and titanium undergo poly coating.

Unsheathed, pocket carry in general lends to faster wear and tear no matter the material. It may be less noticeable on pure metal compared to a coated surface.

Coating is for grip-related texture, not protection. The type of metal below the coating does not make a difference on surface durability.

Protective coatings are typically clear lacquer.  None of our pens are lacquered as this creates a slick surface that does not support grip, which is necessary/helpful given the weight and dimension of our pens.

If you use the pen for everyday carry, we recommend protecting right away if your storage method generates faster wear.  We advise storing it in a pen case or cover that has a deep-carry clip.

Some buyers elect to lacquer their pen/pencil themselves understanding that modification voids the 30-day warranty. Remove ink cartridge and protect bolt action if you consider applying a lacquer coating. Separate barrel from tip protecting threads, remove clip, and mask bolt shaft/pin.

TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS:

INK INSTALLATION

INK FAQs

IF YOUR PEN SUDDENLY STOPS WORKING

REMOVING LEAKED INK INSIDE PEN BARREL

If it is our standard oil ink, we recommend cleaning with either a mild acetone (finger nail polish remover) or isopropyl alcohol.  If it gel ink, warm water should work.  Use Q-tips and/or a soft micro-fiber to gently remove the ink.  Be sure to dry thoroughly before reassembly. Canned air works well for this.
